History of Janssen

Janssen Pharmaceutica N.V.

Based in Belgium, Janssen Pharmaceutica N.V. was established in 1953 by a young medical doctor, Dr Paul Janssen. Unlike most pharmaceutical companies, it was created not as a subsidiary of a chemical factory but solely with the aim of conducting pharmacological research. The one objective of the company has always been the continuous development of better drugs to improve the quality of life.

In 1961, Janssen Pharmaceutica was acquired by Johnson & Johnson . With more than 80 drugs to its name, Janssen is one of the most innovative pharmaceutical companies in the world and its products have found major applications in human medicine.

The company's worldwide research and development center, the Janssen Research Foundation (JRF) is conducting research and development into a wide range of human disorders, including mental illness, neurological disorders, anesthesia and analgesia, gastrointestinal disorders, fungal infection, allergies and cancer.

In veterinary medicine the emphasis is on developing drugs to treat fungal disease and worm and parasite infestation.

Cilag

Cilag, an acronym formed from the initial letters of Chemical Industry Laboratory AG, was founded in 1936 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Working out of a small laboratory initially, its founder, Dr Bernard Joos, proved to be a creative and prolific research chemist. By 1952 he had discovered seven new chemical compounds and developed them into new products.

Spearheaded by an analgesic for the urinary tract, the company expanded into Austria and Germany and became a name in the international pharmaceutical market.

In 1959, Cilag was acquired into the Johnson & Johnson family of companies. This affiliation provided access to extensive research capabilities for the development of new compounds and the necessary resources to market innovative pharmaceutical products in new therapeutic areas. Its R&D track record covers discoveries and developments in the fields of biotechnology, central nervous system, women's health, dermatology, anti-infectives, immunology and antimycotics.

R&D

Pharmaceutical research and development
Innovative science is the basis of innovative products. We focus resources on research programs that show both real scientific merit and a potential contribution to treating inadequately treated diseases. Publication and professional recognition are major measures of significant scientific findings. Our scientists have been recognized for a wide variety of achievements, among them:

  • RWJPRI researchers and their external collaborators were recognized with two cover stories in Science, the prestigious journal of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. One describes the discovery of a peptide that mimics a much larger protein, creating the potential for a new technology platform; the other details a major finding about T cell receptors.

  • The World Health Organization selected about 200 drugs which are essential to the health of very large numbers of people and ensures that they are internationally available at a reasonable price. Five Janssen products have been selected for the WHO List of Essential Drugs, more than any other company.

What makes us so successful in today's competitive environment, is our unique organizational structure, exceptional people, and cutting-edge technologies.

Janssen Pharmaceutica Marketing

The medicines discovered and developed by our R&D organizations are marketed predominantly by our own sales and marketing forces, which are respected by members of the medical community throughout the world.

The early foundations of this international network were laid by Cilag (1936) and Janssen Pharmaceutica (1953). Both companies established medical marketing and sales operations in various countries to support the medicines discovered in their laboratories. When, in the early 1990s, healthcare systems around the world underwent massive changes, it was decided to combine these local operations under a single name, Janssen-Cilag, in countries where both had a presence. This unified structure allows increased flexibility and customer responsiveness, and ensures the optimum use of resources. The local companies are responsible for registration, clinical development, medical information and sales in the local markets.

Our strength lies in what we value: customers, innovation, integrity, people and performance. Today, Janssen-Cilag is a leading pharmaceutical group of companies. This group has more than 17,000 employees worldwide, establishments in 46 countries and it markets its products in more than 175 countries. Even as healthcare systems worldwide change rapidly, our mission remains constant: we are determined to play a constructive role in dealing with the issue of healthcare costs by providing our customers with innovative, cost-effective products and services that enhance the quality of care and patient outcomes.

In Europe, Australia and Mexico, our products are distributed by Janssen-Cilag. In the USA and Canada, they are marketed under the Janssen Pharmaceutica, Ortho Biotech, Ortho-McNeil and Janssen-Ortho labels. In some Asian countries, such as China (Xian-Janssen), Japan (Janssen-Kyowa) and South Korea (Janssen Korea), Janssen Pharmaceutica has set up a joint venture with one or more local partners. In most other Asian countries, our medicines are marketed by Janssen-Cilag affiliates.
